9. Balanced Stone
24th April 2005
Under Golden Cap, Dorset

Walking back after I had made the Stone Lines I tried a couple of single stone balances to replicate the fragility of this place.  Working under Golden Cap has a profound affect on me and I have learnt the true nature of this precious but precarious landscape.  This landscape will disappear in time and it is ever changing now.  Nothing is permanent and all things will change.  The desire to preserve is disappearing and everything that man has made has its own natural lifespan.  Man himself has his own limited timescale on this earth.  It is fundamental that we look after this earth as best we can so that we do not destroy it, but we have to respect nature and its laws and not impose our selfish satisfactions on it.

I managed two balances, and got a couple of photos before they fell.  These balances can last an extremely short space of time.  It was too windy to try any more as the rocks I was balancing were fairly large and it was quite dangerous in the circumstances
