14. Cracked Stones
30th May 2005
Under Golden Cap, Seatown, Dorset

This sculpture was done on the same day as Stone & Brach Wall and Beach Cairn.  I found another flat recumbent rock that stood out from the beach.  This stone too had a feeling of immovability and permanence.  I decided I had enough time to do something else and tried cracking some stones, gradating in size, laid on the large flat rock.

I am not keen on breaking things or any act of destruction.  But sometimes it seems right to expose the inner core of a small stone, much like when knapping flint; the inner, sharp edges can be exposed by the carefully taking away the outer layers.

When the stones are laid out in order of size, with a slight curvature to the line, it becomes like a backbone, the spine of an organic form, gently lying, sunning itself on the stone.
