5. Sand Serpent
10th August 2005
Wembury Beach, Wembury, South Devon

I got an early start and was on the beach by 7:30am.  Very few people about and I knew that I had a few hours before I would see anyone.  I only saw a few dog walkers in the first few hours.

The sun was still quite low and the shadows were quite stunning so I decided to work with these.  Using the four elementals of earth, fire, air and water runs through my work and it is important that I use as many of these as I can.

I decided that a sinuous line would fit the feeling hat I had and found that by piling the sand up, I could cast some interesting shadows.  I needed to work quite quickly so that I wouldn’t lose the stunning light from the sun.

The sun, by the time I had finished, had of course got quite high and the stunning shadows were now hiding from the heat of the day.  It was interesting that if you looked from the direction of the sun, the sculpture all but disappeared.  If you looked from the other side, it stood out quite well.  Took some photos and sat down to savour the place.

While I was sitting there a fairly old chap came walking along the beach from the sun side and walked straight through the sculpture without appearing to notice!  I repaired the sculpture and sat down again.

I was just starting to form the idea for the next piece with some flat pebbles when a couple decided to settle down about ten yards to my left.  The rest of the beach was pretty well deserted so why they had decided on this spot I had no idea.  They set up umbrellas, tables, chairs, the works really and then they started taking their clothes off.  Before I knew it they had removed all of their clothing and had started swimming / sunbathing right in front of me.  Although I am far from prudish, this quite threw my train of thought so after about a quarter of an hour I discreetly left.

I went back in the evening to see how it had survived.  After half an hours repair work it looked pretty good.  The sun was low again, and I took some more, much better photos.
