Artist's StatementUnlike other artists, I don’t work in a studio, but directly in the landscape using the natural materials that are close at hand. Both the landscape and the materials have a major influence in the final work. I work in most types of weather and all seasons, preferring quiet places where I can concentrate more fully on the work in hand. Carrying no pre-conceived ideas with me when set out, I start a piece by reacting to all of the surrounding influences to all of my senses. Once I find a place which influences me strongly, I find that I return to the same place many times and then develop the ideas that have already occurred. The particular feel of a place on a particular day dictates to me what should be made. The majority of my work is deliberately transient, being washed away by the tide, or blown by the wind. This is a direct correlation to the effects of the elements of weather and season to the landscape itself. Erosion and deposition work in conjunction to create a landscape that is forever transient. Sometimes I can return to a place to find it substantially altered from the previous visit. This can be from winter storms, cliff falls, or just the flow of a river. In this way my work reflects the transience of all that surrounds me. I like to think that my work is entirely eco-friendly, being made from the materials found in the place that they exist, only for them to return to the same place whilst taking their own particular journey. Because of the transitory nature of my work, the photograph is the only way that I can record the presence of my work. The pictures taken record the sculpture’s existences in that moment of time before the materials disappear back to nature. |
